Program notes

This piece is both a message from Sophia to those who came to her recital, and a small gift from me to her.

However you remember the brief time you shared together at Peabody with her, may this moment—this performance— be etched deep within you, a memory gently held, a beautiful trace that time cannot erase.

This piece requires the participation of the audience.

Prior to the performance, each audience member must record a one-minute voice memo addressed to the performer—something they wish to say. These voice memos must then be collected and distributed randomly to the audience via QR codes.

At a certain point in the piece, when the lights go out, the audience is instructed to access their assigned QR code on their phones and play the voice memo at approximately 50% volume.

The pianist must be equipped with two EBows and a ching (or crotales in C), and the vocalist should also have a ching. Additionally, there is a section in the piece where three singers—or cherished mentors—sing from behind the stage or from within the stage space. They do not need to read from a score and should sing a spoken-style, recitative-like text on a single pitch, pianissimo. These three singers are not required to align with each other.

In the piano score, diamond note heads indicate the pitches to be sustained using the Ebow. Please adjust the Ebow’s position to produce the corresponding note as clearly as possible.
