Program notes
Friction II was written for Olivia Harrison and serves as a study of various types of plosive and friction-based sounds that can be produced with an instrument. The piece is designed with careful consideration of a wide range of frictions: from the friction of air, to the contact between the instrument and the body, to the friction created by the tongue and its tip, and even to the vocal cords.
I aimed to explore the different ways friction can manifest through the clarinet and sought to orchestrate a dialogue between the instrument and the voice, blending and reconfiguring their sounds in diverse ways.
Furthermore, by employing a wide range of rhythmic, metric, and indeterminate techniques, I attempted to express and contrast the many forms of friction throughout the work.
